Amanda Bynes Addresses Fans On Social Media After Filing To End Her Conservatorship
KEY POINTS
- Amanda Bynes filed a petition to end her conservatorship last month
- She addressed her fans in a new Instagram video
- She has been under conservatorship since 2013
Amanda Bynes has addressed her fans on social media, less than weeks after filing papers to end her nine-year conservatorship last month. The “Easy A” star posted a selfie video on her new Instagram account to give her fans an update on her legal battle.
“What’s up, Instagram? Amanda Bynes here,” she said in the video posted Monday. “My court date is coming up in two weeks. I want to thank you all so much for your love and support. Peace out,” she added, before tagging media outlets in her post.
The actress filed to end her conservatorship in late February. Her mother, Lynn Bynes, was granted temporary conservatorship over her in August 2013 after she underwent a psychiatric hospitalization due to mental health issues. In September last year, Lynn requested to extend her daughter’s guardianship for at least two more years after it had been extended a number of times since 2013.
After Amanda’s filing last month to end her conservatorship, Lynn’s attorney in a statement said that the actress’s mother was hopeful for her daughter’s future.
“Lynn is so incredibly proud of the progress Amanda has made over the last few years and is so excited about the next chapter in Amanda’s life,” attorney Tamar Arminak told E! News. “Based on the petition, and Amanda’s amazing progress, she completely supports Amanda’s request to terminate the conservatorship.”
Meanwhile, Amanda’s lawyer David Esquibas said in a statement to TMZ that his client’s decision to terminate her conservatorship was not inspired by Britney Spears, who successfully ended her conservatorship in November 2021 after 14 years.
According to Esquibas, Amanda had begun the process of ending her conservatorship long before the #FreeBritney movement last year. He said the timing of Amanda’s legal proceedings was a matter of coincidence, saying Amanda has never mentioned Spears’ own legal battle in their conversations. He also said that once her conservatorship is terminated, “Amanda will be free to live her life as she chooses.”
Amanda, who got engaged to her boyfriend Paul Michael in 2020, is set to attend a hearing on her conservatorship on March 22.
