Amazon Prime Better Than Netflix? Streaming Service Has 12,800 Movies, 3 Times More Than Netflix
KEY POINTS
- Amazon Prime Video has reportedly topped Netflix when it comes to the number of movie and TV show offers
- Per Reelgood records, Netflix only has 3,781 movies available while Prime Video has a total of 12,828
- Prime Video has around 150 million subscribers so far
Amazon Prime Video has reportedly outran Netflix, with the former offering three times more movie selections than its streaming service competitor.
Although Netflix is still the top streaming service when it comes to subscribers, Prime Video has now tripled its content and has officially exceeded its contender by having three times as many shows.
According to streaming service aggregator Reelgood, records have shown that Prime has procured a whopping 12,828 films, while Netflix has a total of 3,781 movies available. The difference, however, is narrowed down when high quality movies are being considered — with Prime still taking the lead 568 to 424 for movies with a rating of 6 or higher on IMDB from at least 300 votes, Forbes reported.
“Looking at the sheer number of movies currently available through each of these platforms, it’s pretty obvious Prime Video wins,” said Reelgood’s Maria Santos. “When it comes to high-quality movies, Prime is still the winner.”
But the streaming market competition isn't limited to just Amazon and Netflix. Other notable platforms such as HBO Max and Hulu are also potential contenders. Santos pointed out that Netflix and HBO Max are neck and neck when it comes to the high-quality movie ranking.
“For second place, it’s a close call between Netflix and HBO Max, with each one having 424 and 421 high-quality movies respectively,” she said. “Considering HBO Max just launched two weeks ago, the service seems off to a good start.”
In addition, Amazon Prime also takes the lead for sheer quantity versus subscription cost as well as TV shows. Prime Video reportedly offers 247 shows per dollar of subscription cost, while Netflix has 149. Meanwhile, Hulu offers 146 shows, Disney+ 34, HBO Max 27 and Apple TV+ 4.
For movies per dollar, records for each service appear a tad off-centered. Prime Video still leads with 1,427 films in total, while Netflix provides 291. HBO Max offers 116, Disney+ 88 and Hulu 85. Apple TV+ lags behind with only one offer.
Considering the stats, it seems that Apple TV+ doesn’t have a good hold as a competitor, Forbes noted. However, after previously pursuing an original content only policy, Apple’s streaming service is now working to amp up its budding platform, amassing more content for its viewers.
So far, Amazon Prime Video has raked in an impressive 150 million subscribers, but it still trails way behind Netflix, which has garnered almost 200 million subscribers. The latter remains the top streaming service across the globe.
