Amazon's Kindle Fire at $199: Are There Other Tablet Options?
It is rumored that Amazon.com has received more than 250,000 preorders for the Kindle Fire - the online retail giant's competitively-priced tablet computer - in the five days since its launch. However, the Kindle Fire, priced at $199, will only be shipped from Nov.15.
If you're unwililng to wait that long, you could look at a few other options, apart from the iPad 2.
Here is a list of some Android-based tablets.
Dell Streak 7
Prices start at $199.99.
Strength: It is an Android 2.2 tablet offering dual-core processing. It has a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera and a 5 megapixel rear camera. It's biggest strength, however, could well be its price.
Weakness: The quality of the screen not particularly good. The general responsiveness of the device to user commands is also a little slow.
ViewSonic ViewPad 7
Prices start at $279.40.
Strength: It is an Android 2.2 tablet offering a seven-inch screen, with both front and rear-facing cameras.
Weakness: The keyboard is certain to be the cause of much frustration amongst users. In addition, the size of the device could well create a sense of awkwardness.
Vizio Tablet VTAB1008
Prices start at $298.00.
Strength: It is an Android 2.3 tablet with customizable interfaces. It can also double up as a universal remote control.
Weakness: It hasn't been designed to be particularly aesthetic. In addition, it simply lacks speed, courtesy its generation-old single-core processor. There is no rear-facing camera.
Acer Iconia Tab A500
Prices start at $379.
Strength: It is an Android 3.1 tablet offering Global Positioning System (GPS). There is also a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera with Auto Focus and a LED flash, as well as a 2 megapixel front-facing camera. There are two USB ports - a full-sized one for connecting external storage devices and a mini-port for transferring files.
Weakness: The first noticeable flaw is its size; it is rather thicker and more inconvenient to hold than most other tablets. Its thickness also makes it comparatively heavy for a tablet. In addition, it has problems running High Definition video files.
Asus Eee Pad Transformer
Prices start at $389.88.
Strength: It is an Android 3.2 Honeycomb tablet with an excellent screen. The device also sports a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera, both of which can shoot and record High Definition videos. An IPS panel made from durable and scratch-resistant glass is viewable at angles up to 178°.
Weakness: When docked the touch screen is less responsive. Despite being able to shoot High Definition videos, playback from the cameras could, perhaps, be fine-tuned a bit.
