Amazon's Proprietary Cloud-Based Gaming Service May Be Released In 2020
These days, it seems like all the tech powerhouses are trying to get into the streaming game. Google Stadia just debuted, Microsoft is working on its Project xCloud setup, and now Amazon is jumping into the fray. In fact, it could be joining Google and Microsoft a lot sooner than you may have imagined: like as early as 2020.
CNET reports (via The Verge) that, according to a few job listings scattered around, Amazon is bringing out its own cloud gaming service next year. The company was spotted as hiring individuals for a "new initiative" as part of its Amazon Web Services team. This would include staff who are part of the new gaming service. One particular job listing located by CNET states that the new cloud-based platform could even be integrated with Twitch, which Amazon already owns.
One job listing in question is seeking someone for its "New AWS Gaming Initiative," specifically, a Principal Product Leader. The listing is quite vague, except for the following information that can be viewed via the official page:
"We believe the evolution that began with arcade communities a quarter at a time, growing to the live streams and e-sports of today, will continue to a future where everyone is a gamer and every gamer can create, compete, collaborate and connect with others at massive scales."
It's clear that Amazon is certainly planning something, though it isn't 100 percent crystal exactly what just yet, though a new cloud gaming service would make perfect sense. Millions of users rely on Amazon's web services each day for their websites and other storage systems to run properly and Amazon is an essential old pro at keeping much of the internet running. It wouldn't be much of a stretch for Amazon to shift some of its resources (or add more) and pivot to cloud services for gaming.
Twitch is a major player in the industry as well and with built-in integration for those who want to stream their games as well as gameplay, this would mark a partnership made in heaven. We'll have to wait and see for Amazon to make an official announcement, but it certainly seems like the company is making important moves.
