Sloan Lipnick was located safely in Maryland by authorities following an Amber Alert that was activated to know her whereabouts over the weekend.
The 9-year-old Lipnick went missing early Saturday after she was last seen in the Denver metro area. The Basalt Police Department then requested the alert later that day.
The Amber Alert also stemmed from an information relayed by a therapist who works with Sloan's mother, Carly Lipnick. This led to the police believing that the girl might be in danger since the 39-year-old Lipnick “doesn't have custody of the child,” a Basalt Police Department spokesperson told 9 News.
Authorities further stated that Sloan was probably traveling with her mother in a 2012 White Audi Q5 bearing Colorado license plate OWO236, said KRDO.
The vehicle was spotted by a highway camera heading east on Interstate 70 in Kansas near the city of Manhattan.
Sloan's discover came after Carly dropped her off “at an address” and told a relative of its location. The relative then contacted the Basalt Police Department, informing them that she was able to locate the girl.
Prior to the Amber Alert, Sloan's father, who lives in Aspen, called the Department Friday after failing to contact Carly on her phone. Police officials then pinged Carly's cellphone in the Denver metro area. They also discovered that Sloan's mother checked out of a hotel around noon Friday, added 9 News.
After hearing of her daughter's safety, Sloan's father flew to Maryland to pick her up. Carly's whereabouts on the other hand, are unknown. She now has an active warrant for her arrest following the incident, reported KDVR.
The mother is described as having brown hair and green eyes and weighs 150 pounds, said KRDO.
The Basalt Police Department spokesperson said the Amber Alert was issued in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Arizona, Oklahoma, Utah and Wyoming. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation spearheads the issuance of the alert.
Created in 1996 after the abduction and murder of 9-year-old Amber Hagerman in Arlington, Texas, the Amber Alert is a backronym for “America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response. It is a message issued by a child abduction alert system that seeks the help of the public to locate abducted children.
In the United States, Amber alerts are usually coursed through radio and television stations, text messages and cable TV via the Emergency Alert System. It is also issued via emails, electronic traffic-conditioning signs and commercial billboards, among others.
