Amelia Hamlin has broken her silence after being accused of "blackfishing" in new photos she shared on social media.
The 19-year-old model posted three new photos of herself on Instagram Thursday. In the pictures, her hair is styled in a long thin braid and her skin tone appeared much darker than in her other recent images. "whiplash got me like..." she captioned the snaps.
A number of Instagram users then accused her of "blackfishing" in the comments. The term refers to non-Black individuals misrepresenting themselves as being Black or mixed race through the use of hairstyling or makeup.
Following the backlash, Hamlin turned off the comments of her Instagram post and addressed the matter on her Instagram Story.
"im receiving a lot of comments in regards to my latest photo. I am being told that I am 'black fishing' – thank you all for educating me on this topic. I recently went on vacation in the sun, and with my Italian heritage I tan very easily," Scott Disick's girlfriend wrote.
"There is no self tanner involved or intention of looking darker than my own natural skin color," Hamlin insisted. "I had a lot of fun creating this look with no malice intention or offense."
Her photos also drew attention in other social media sites, with some Twitter users claiming Hamlin was "morphing into a Kardashian." Her boyfriend, Disick, used to date Kourtney Kardashian. The exes, who share three children together — Mason, 11, Penelope, 8, and Reign, 6 — remain amicable.
"If it feels wrong, it probably is. Cultural appropriation didn’t take long... is Amelia trying to rebrand herself a la Kardashian? Cringe," one tweeted.
"So thanks for educating me but I’m just going to turn comments off and say it’s natural... #RHOBH," the netizen added, reacting to Hamlin's post on her Instagram Story.
Meanwhile, Disick suggested he isn't ruling out marrying Kourtney in a teaser for an upcoming episode of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" Season 20. Kim and Kris urged him to propose to Kourtney, and he gave a positive response.
"Well I love you and I'm ready to marry you right here, right now," Disick said. "Kourtney knows that we'll eventually get married and live a good life."
