American Airlines announced on Tuesday that it is purchasing 20 supersonic planes from Boom Supersonic.

Boom promises that its new technology has improved supersonic performance and stability to "maximize safety and efficiency," while also cutting flights times almost in half along with using 100% sustainable fuel.

"We are proud to share our vision of a more connected and sustainable world with American Airlines," Blake Scholl, Founder and CEO of Boom, said in a press release.

United Airlines has also committed to the Overture jets and bought 15 of them in 2021.

Scholl noted in a statement to NBC News on Tuesday that Boom wants "to do supersonic as quickly as possible" because the company believes that "the world needs this."

"We believe Overture can help American deepen its competitive advantage on network, loyalty and overall airline preference through the paradigm-changing benefits of cutting travel times in half," Scholl said.

Boom is hopeful that taking a ride on its supersonic planes will be a completely upgraded experience from travel time, to seating and even the view from the window.

"So, every seat, you're gonna have a large window, where you can see the view from 60,000 feet, the curvature of the earth, the sky a deeper blue," Scholl said.

The move comes as travelers are looking for advancements in the airline industry amid major delays, cancelations and staff shortages. The Federal Aviation Administration also recently said it will consider making minimum dimensions for airplane seating since some airlines have majorly condensed their seating.

"Passengers want flights that are faster, more convenient, more sustainable and that's what Overture delivers," Scholl told CNBC in an interview Tuesday.

"Flight times can be as little as half as what we have today, and that works great in networks like American where we can fly Miami to London in less than five hours," Scholl added.

Boom says that it will be able to have flights from Miami to London in less than 5 hours, which usually takes about 9 hours, Los Angeles to Honolulu in 3 hours, which usually takes 5 and a half hours, and Seattle to Tokyo in six hours, which usually takes about 10 hours.
