An American bully attacked an 11-year old boy while visiting a friend at their home north of Twin Cities Wednesday.

The youngster sustained serious injuries and had to be airlifted to a Twin Cities Hospital. Chief Sheriff's Deputy Lisa Lovering reported that the victim suffered “extensive damage that required more specialized care than our local hospitals could provide.”

An air ambulance took the boy to Children's Minnesota Hospital. His family requested for the identity of their son to remain anonymous and has requested privacy.

“He is stable and will be having multiple surgeries,” Lovering added.

While the visiting boy had major injuries, another 11-year old youngster suffered only minor wounds caused by the same animal. Ironically, the latter and the dog lives in the same house. The Isanti County Sheriff's Office said in an article about the incident that the “boys were the only people home” at the time of the attack.

Homeowner Tom Brownell meanwhile said that it was unusual for the dog to have acted that way. According to him, “Radar” is really playful and belongs to his adult son who recently moved in with him together with his girlfriend temporarily.

Radar had recently been neutered and was wearing a protective cone when it bit the boys who were taking him out of his kennel.

“I don't know if they did something to provoke him,” quipped Brownell.

Brownell is now worried about the fate of Radar, saying that he afraid that authorities might put him down.

“That's what it sounds like what might happen. That's a shame. He's so young.”

As an answer to Brownell's reservations, Lovering said that there is always a chance that the dog will have to be destroyed, but “it is the owner's decision.”

The 10-month old Radar has been ordered to be “confined under quarantine” for 10 days so that authorities may know if it is rabid.

Although it gives an impression of great strength for its size due to its muscular body and blocky head, the American Bully Kennel Club, or ABKC, recognizes the American bully to be a companion breed that exhibits “confidence, a zest for life, along with an exuberant willingness to please and bond with their family.” They are gentle despite their fierce appearance and is great with kids, and is “extremely friendly with strangers, other dogs and other animals.”
