‘American Crime Story: Versace’ Full-Length Trailer Teases Andrew Cunanan’s Assassination Plans
“American Crime Story” Season 2 just dropped its first full-length trailer for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace.”
The over one-minute clip opens with serial killer Andrew Cunanan (Darren Criss) running after the famed designer and shooting him dead. In the next scene, Versace’s long-time partner, Antonio D’Amico (Ricky Martin) runs to Versace’s rescue, but he’s too late. The designer is already dead, and Antonio’s white clothing is filled with blood.
When Versace’s sister, Donatella (Penelope Cruz), arrives, she is shocked to see Antonio’s blood-stained attire. She sits down for an interview with the reporters and tells them that she won’t allow anyone to kill her brother twice.
But perhaps the most chilling part of the trailer had to do with Andrew’s whereabouts before the assassination being exposed. In one of the scenes, he meets up with an unnamed man at the beach and talks about Versace. Andrew’s obsession with the famous designer was what encouraged him to take the latter’s life.
Andrew also seemingly applies for a job to give him the opportunity to get closer to his target. He starts living the good life, but his target has always been set. According to E! News, Andrew’s four other victims will also be discussed in the series.
Last summer, executive producer Ryan Murphy spoke about “Versace” while at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. “We really get to examine the victims. In many ways, we’re trying to bring to life and celebrate those people that Andrew Cunanan snuffed out,” he said.
The series will also give emphasis to gay rights in 1997. “I think it’s more than why he was killed, it’s sort of why it was allowed to happen. We’re trying to talk about a crime within a social idea… Versace, who was the last victim, really did not have to die,” Murphy said.
The trailer for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” also revealed the premiere date for the series. New episodes of “American Crime Story” Season 2 will kick off on Jan. 17.
