‘American Horror Story’ Season 5 Spoilers: How The ‘Freak Show’ Top Hat Clue Is Related To Lady Gaga

It was only a matter of time before the terrifying truth was revealed. After months of theorizing what the Season 5 theme of “American Horror Story” could be, Ryan Murphy, co-mastermind behind the spooky FX drama, finally came clean about what he has planned for the twisted upcoming plot.

On Feb. 25 Lady Gaga revealed through a short Twitter video that should would be starring in the fifth installment of “AHS,” which is set to premiere in October. Not only did she reveal her new acting gig, but the songstress then unveiled the highly speculated about theme for the upcoming series: “Hotel.”

But what does “Hotel” possibly have to do with the clues Murphy previously gave us? During an interview with Entertainment Weekly in October the co-creator of the hit miniseries dished that one of the main clues from Season 4 involved a paper coffee cup with a top-hat symbol.

“That is a big season 5 clue! It’s an arcane clue, but it’s very purposeful, and it illuminates something that you’ll be like, ‘Oh! You dirty bastard!’” he told EW. And he wasn’t kidding! After we learned what the Top Hat clue was referring to we definitely found ourselves slapping our foreheads.

EW confirmed that the Top Hat is directly related to Season 5’s newest star, Lady Gaga. According to reports, the image was a nod to the classic 1935 musical comedy film, “Top Hat,” which follows the story of an American dancer who moves to London to star in a show. The clue was also referencing the song “Cheek to Cheek,” which was originally written for the movie “Top Hat,” and also the title of Lady Gaga’s duet with Tony Bennett.
