‘American Idol’ Season 15 Finale Spoilers: 2016 Top 2 Finalists Revealed; Who Was Voted Off? [RECAP]
“American Idol” is one day away from crowning its very last winner. On part one of the Season 15 finale, the contestants performed again in hopes of making it to Thursday’s show, but host Ryan Seacrest revealed who was eliminated and who moved on to become the Top 2 finalists.
Episode 23 kicked off with all three “American Idol” hopefuls — Trent Harmon, La’Porsha Renae and Dalton Rapattoni — performing part of the song “Stole the Show” by Kygo featuring Parson James. Seacrest then revealed that the show would have three rounds: Round one would an original song the contestants recorded, which will be released on iTunes if they win; Round two is a song chosen for them by creator Simon Fuller; and Round three is a song the contestants performed earlier on the show but wanted to sing again.
Round One
Trent kicked off the first round by performing his song “Falling,” a smooth R&B-type ballad. The judges don’t get to critique round one, so the show moved on to Dalton singing his original song “Strike A Match.” Finally, La’Porsha took the stage to perform “Battles,” a feel-good track about overcoming your battles.
Following round one, Seacrest brought all three contestants out for the elimination and to reveal the Top 2 finalists. The first to make it through was La’Porsha and then Trent, which means Dalton was voted off.
Round Two
Fuller chose “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes for Trent to sing in the second round. Judge Keith Urban said the performance was good and it’s been extraordinary to watch him. Jennifer Lopez told Trent it was amazing, and Harry Connick Jr. said it was a nice song choice for him and he did a great job with it.
Up next was La’Porsha who was given the song “A House Is Not A Home” by Dion Warwick. Lopez said the single mother performed the song beautifully, and Connick Jr. said emotionally he loved it. Urban told La’Porsha it was smoldering and beautiful. Lopez also told Seacrest if she had to pick a winner for that round, it would be La’Porsha.
Round Three
Trent sang first again for the third and final round, and he chose to go with Sia’s “Chandelier.” He first performed the song on episode 20 during the Top 4 reveal. All three judges loved it as much as they did the first time he performed it. Check out Trent performing “Chandelier’ on episode 20 below:
La’Porsha decided to sing Rihanna’s “Diamonds” again. She first sang the song on episode 16 during the Top 10 reveal, and like Trent, the judges absolutely loved it and had nothing negative to say. Check out La’Porsha singing “Diamonds” on episode 16 below:
The Season 15 “American Idol” finale airs Thursday at 8 p.m. EDT on Fox.
