Phillip Phillips is the new American Idol! The bluesy Phillips was crowned the new American Idol on Wednesday, May 23, after beating out Jessica Sanchez in record viewer voting. He is the fifth male Idol winner in a row.
While embracing his new found fame, Phillips, a 21-year-old pawn shop worker from Leesburg, Ga, has decided to get out of the family business.
According to TMZ, Phil's dad Donnie has been mulling over the idea of selling the Albany, GA pawn shop, for quite a while.
But now that Phillip has the American Idol crown, along with the ability to make serious money, his father is pretty decided on selling the shop, according to the report.
Before Phillip's Idol run, his father Donnie planned to sell the place for $200,000. There has been no word on whether he plans to raise the price on the business.
Phillips won the American Idol competition after host Ryan Seacrest announced that voters had chosen him over fellow competitor Jessica Sanchez.
The Leesburg native cried while singing his final song on the show Home, the tune that is likely to be his first single.
I have no idea why I won, man, Phillips said in his backstage dressing room. I guess some people liked the music that I was doing. I'm just lucky. ... I was just doing my thing each week.
The 21-year-old singer received a record-high 132 million votes after Tuesday's final showdown with high school Jessica Sanchez, 16, of Chula Vista, Calif. The vote count was not announced, typical for the contest.
Phillips' victory made him the fifth male in a row to have won American Idol. The last female to win was Jordin Sparks in 2007.
Last year's winner was Scotty McCreery, preceded by Lee DeWyze, Kris Allen and David Cook.
Phillips has officially been classified as similar to the former winners in that he is a young Caucasian guitar player, also known to Idol watchers as WGWGs - white guys with guitars.
