American Music Awards 2012: AMA Winners And Attendees Rock The Red Carpet [PHOTOS]
Artists, musicians and bands gathered Sunday night at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles for the 2012 American Music Awards where Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj were the biggest winners of the night.
The AMA show paid homage to the late Dick Clark, who produced the show before passing away this year. Sunday night's celebration for the award show's 40th anniversary included memorable clips from past shows the last four decades.
Justin Bieber was named favorite artist of the year, beating out Rihanna, Katy Perry, Maroon 5 and Drake for the AMA. Bieber, 18, brought his mother Pattie Malette on the stage to accept the award.
"This is my mom," he said. "She's little, but she's beautiful," thanking her for believing in him. Bieber also won the first award of the night for favorite pop/rock male artist.
"I want to say this is for all the haters who thought that I was just here for one or two years. I feel like I'm going to be here for a very long time," he said.
Nicki Minaj was also a big winner for the night, winning favorite rap/hip hop album for "Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded" and favorite rap/hip hop artist.
Taylor Swift won her fifth consecutive award for favorite country female artist.
"This is unreal. I want to thank the fans. You guys are the ones who voted on this," she said.
Carly Rae Jepsen won the new artist-of-the-year award over One Direction, who did not win any of the three awards they were nominated for.
David Guetta won the first AMA for a new category, Electric Dance Music, over Skrillex and Calvin Harris.
"It's wonderful also to see electronic music recognized at this level in the U.S.," he said from a taped acceptance speech.
Other winners included Katie Perry for favorite pop/rock female artist, Maroon 5 for favorite pop/rock band, duo or group, Lady Antebellum for favorite country music band, duo or group, Usher for favorite soul/R&B male artist, Beyonce for favorite soul/R&B female artist, Rihanna for favorite soul/R&B album, Linkin Park for favorite alternative rock artist, Adele for favorite adult contemporary artist; Shakira for favorite latin music artist, and tobyMac for favorite contemporary inspirational artist.
The 18 performances included Usher, Minaj who sang her new song "Freedom," Taylor Swift, Ke$ha, Christina Aguilera, Carrie Underwood, Pink, Pitbull, No Doubt and Carly Rae Jepson. Kelly Clarkson sang her hit songs "Miss Independent," "Since U Been Gone," "Stronger" and "Catch" in honor of an upcoming greatest hits album. Stevie Wonder, who has won 11 AMAs in his career, performed a tribute to the late Dick Clark, who created the American Music Awards in 1973. Ryan Seacrest introduced the performance, which included a photo montage of Clark's career.
"This show, on its 40th anniversary, still reflects Dick's original vision," Seacrest said. "Bring the top artists on the planet together on an equal stage and then let the music speak for itself."
Singer Brandy also paid tribute to Whitney Houston who died this February before the Grammy Awards.
The most memorable performance, though, was Korean rapper Psy who teamed up with MC Hammer for a mash-up of "Gangnam Style" and Hammer's 1991 hit "Too Legit To Quit."
