An American woman convicted of helping to kill her mother and hiding her in a suitcase in Indonesia in 2014 was released early from a Bali prison on Friday and is now being deported to the U.S.

Heather Mack, who was almost 19 years old and pregnant at the time, was released after serving seven years of a 10-year sentence. Mack was convicted of helping her then 21-year-old boyfriend Tommy Schaefer murder her mother. Schaefer was sentenced to 18 years in prison for his role in the crime.

The couple was accused of beating wealthy Chicago socialite Sheila von Wiese-Mack, 62, after an argument at the St. Regis Bali Resort in August 2014. They then stuffed her into a suitcase and tried to flee. Police caught the two after a taxi driver noticed bloodstains that had leaked from the luggage, The Washington Post reported.

Police reports cited by Chicago media revealed that Mack and her mother had a troubled relationship and that Von Wiese-Mack had frequently reported that her daughter punched and bit her.

Mack was released from prison three years early for good conduct and taking part in activities at the jail such as dance and design, a warden at the Kerobokan prison told the Associated Press.

The AP noted that a few of Mack's friends were seen welcoming her outside the prison, including Oshar Putu Melody Suartama, an Australian woman who has been raising Mack’s daughter, Stella.
