The next installment in the renowned "Amnesia" series by Frictional Games is coming soon, and it's bringing with it some interesting new twists to the tried-and-true formula that its predecessors are known for.
"Amnesia: The Bunker" is set in a semi-open map, and for the first time in the series, players actually get to fight back to some degree. The series is popular for its tense atmosphere and the lingering dread of knowing that some sort of monster is always lurking in the shadows. However, the introduction of combat doesn't seem like it'll take much away from the classic gameplay.
Players will be crawling through the titular bunker as Henri Clement, a French soldier during the Great War who has found himself trapped in an underground complex with nothing but the uniform on his back, a dynamo flashlight and a single-action revolver with one bullet in the chamber.
Like the earlier "Amnesia" games, this one will feature some sort of monster that will constantly be stalking the player as they explore the abandoned tunnels. This monster will reportedly react to everything that the player does, and every move and sound they make may catch the entity's attention and make life a living hell for Henri.
Combat doesn't appear to be the main focus of "Amnesia: The Bunker," which means players still need to rely mostly on their wits to survive. Physics-based object interaction is still a thing in the game, so prepare to panic all over again during high-pressure chase scenarios.
"The Bunker" will have elements of randomization and unpredictability, though the extent wasn't specified. Still, players will have to expect the unexpected every time they run through the game's cruel sandbox where every turn could lead to a new nightmare.
It will also include scavenging and crafting mechanics that let Henri make his own solutions to certain problems.
The game still involves plenty of exploration, experimentation and puzzle-solving, and the introduction of a non-linear map means players will have to figure things out as they go.
"Amnesia: The Bunker" will release for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X and S in March 2023.
