‘Among Us’ Devs Explain Why New Content Is Taking So Long
KEY POINTS
- "Among Us" is very popular, but updates tend to arrive slowly
- Developer InnerSloth recently published a blog explaining why
- It appears that the game will be better in the near future, but fans will have to wait
“Among Us” developers at InnerSloth have provided some insight into why updates are taking a while to arrive in a new blog entry explaining what they’ve been up to.
Previously, the devs announced that they will be adding a new map to the game called “The Airship.” The map is based on the “Henry Stickmin” series of games and offers players a lot of room to run and hide, while also adding a few new mechanics such as ladders. But the new map isn’t the only thing the developers are working on.
In a blog post, InnerSloth said they are also working on an Accounts system that players can use to connect with other players off rounds, keep a record of their stats and so on. The devs said they are currently focusing on making sure moderation works perfectly, and when it does, they will move on to other interesting features.
Now, why does it take the devs a lot of time to introduce new content to “Among Us”? Here’s what they have to say about it.
Unexpected traction
The devs explicitly state that they were not expecting the game to become this popular, especially since it was launched more than two years ago. They explained,
“Among Us gained incredible traction pretty late into 2020 that we weren’t expecting, and that meant A LOT of change for us. Not to dive into too much organizational stuff, but not only did we need to switch back to working on Among Us after thinking it was done, but we also needed to set ourselves up more sustainably to work on the game.”
Restructuring
The unexpected traction, the devs said, meant that they were caught unprepared. Due to this, they needed to take some time to make sure they do things right for the game and for its huge fanbase. They wrote,
“We had to spend 2 months just restructuring, figuring out new processes, and getting external partners to help us manage on board.”
Certifications
Aside from working on new content, the devs also worked on bringing the game to other platforms such as the Nintendo Switch and the Xbox. This meant having to provide support, get certifications and taking other steps.
There are also other things over and above their control such as legal issues, meetings with other people beyond the four-person team developing the game and so on.
All that said, the devs, particularly InnerSloth community organizer Victoria Tran, said the team does not want to sacrifice quality in favor of quick releases.
