Amy Winehouse Dead: Mother Said it Was ‘Only a Matter of Time’ [VIDEO OF LAST PERFORMANCE]
Amy Winehouse's family said her death has left a gaping hole in their lives.
Our family has been left bereft by the loss of Amy, a wonderful daughter, sister, niece. She leaves a gaping hole in our lives, the Winehouse family told Us Weekly in a statement. We are coming together to remember her and we would appreciate some privacy and space at this terrible time.
The 27-year-old British singer was found dead in her London home on Saturday after what friends claimed was a drink and drugs binge. Friends of the singer told the UK paper Mirror that the raspy-voice singer died after a binge on ecstasy and booze.
Police haven't disclosed whether the singer's death was drug-related. A post-mortem is due on Monday.
She has spent the last seven days on a massive bender and people were saying she's going to drink herself to death, the Mirror reported being told by a friend.
The paper also reported that sources claimed Amy died from a combination of ecstasy pill and huge amounts of alcohol, coupled with the fact that she suffered from emphysema.
Amy Winehouse survived by her father Mitch, along with her mother Janis and her older brother Alex.
Us Weekly reported that Mitch was in New York City when he learned of his daughter's death.
I'm getting on the next plane back. I'm coming home. I have to be with Amy, he reportedly said, according to Us Weekly. I can't crack up for her sake. My family needs me. I'm devastated; it's such a shock.
Us Weekly also reported that Janis believed Amy's death was only a matter of time After meeting her a day earlier.
She seemed out of it, Janis said, according to Us Weekly. But her passing so suddenly still hasn't hit me.
Following the visit Amy told her mom, I love you, mum and Janis said those are words I will always treasure, Us Weekly reported, adding that the mother said I'm glad I saw her when I did.
For years Amy Winehouse battled drugs and dinking addictions. The five-time Grammy award-winner recently left a rehabilitation program around two months ago. She recently had a disastrous performance in Serbia where fans booed her because Amy kept mumbling through songs and often left her band to fill in for her. The disappointed fans believed she was drunk.
Earlier this week, Amy made a surprise appearance at her goddaughter Dionne Bromfield's gig at the iTunes festival at the Roundhouse in Camden. Though Amy looked much better from her Belgrade performance, she did show signs of intoxication as she was dancing oddly.
That's probably the last public performance Amy did.
Since news of Amy's death spread, comedian and former drug addict Russell Brand wrote on his web site that she was a genius. They both knew each other before reaching fame.
