Android 5.0 Lollipop Update: US Cellular Galaxy S5, AT&T HTC One M8 Get New Software
Android 5.0 Lollipop updates continue to trickle out to smartphones in the U.S. and the Samsung Galaxy S5 for U.S. Cellular and HTC One M8 for AT&T are the latest devices to receive the new software.
The Android 5.0 update has been hitting U.S. devices for several months with the Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8 models for Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile also receiving it. Devices overseas have also gotten the update.
U.S. Cellular began sending out the Android 5.0 update for the Galaxy S5 Monday, having confirmed availability on its support page. The update will be sent over the air, meaning it should reach the Galaxy S5 handsets wirelessly. Users should be prompted to update their devices automatically once the software hits, but they can also access Settings > More > About Device > Software Update to see if an update is available.
Users can also install the update manually using Samsung’s Kies software. All U.S. Cellular Galaxy S5 handsets should receive the update over several days.
The system build or exact system version is called G900R4VXU1BOC1, which includes all of the latest Android 5.0.1 features, such as Google’s Material design interface, on/off toggles, notifications on the onscreen, enhancements to Samsung’s TouchWiz interface, floating action buttons and many more features. The update takes up about 900MB of memory on U.S. Cellular Galaxy S5 handsets.
AT&T will begin sending out the Android 5.0 update for the HTC One M8 Tuesday. HTC Vice President Mohammed Versi confirmed via Twitter that the update will be sent over the air starting at 10 am PST.
There is currently little information about the update; however, Versi says it won’t include HTC’s new Sense 7 user interface, which was introduced on the new HTC One M9 smartphone. The M8 should receive Sense 7 with its next software update, according to Versi.
Users should be prompted to update their HTC One M8 handsets automatically once the software hits, but they can also access Settings > About > Software updates to see if an update is available.
