Andy Dalton Salary: Here's How Much Cowboys QB Earned In 10 Seasons
KEY POINTS
- Andy Dalton played for Cincinnati Bengals for nine seasons
- The 32-year-old quarterback signed a one-year deal worth up to $7 million with the Cowboys
- Dalton recorded 30,000 pass yards, 200 pass touchdowns and 70 wins in his career
Andy Dalton signed up to play for the Dallas Cowboys this year, but a recent injury could prematurely end his season.
After being drafted by the team in 2011, Dalton played for the Cincinnati Bengals for nine seasons. During his time with Cincinnati, the quarterback made $83 million, including at least $24 million from roster, signing and workout bonuses, Spotrac reported.
The Bengals decided to go in a different direction after getting rookie QB Joe Burrow in the NFL Draft. The team was set to pay Dalton $17 million this season and tried to ship him off, but there were no takers for the 10-year-veteran.
Cincinnati then decided to release the Katy, Texas native. The Cowboys were able to pick him up for a one-year deal worth up to $7 million, with $3 million guaranteed, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported in May, citing unnamed sources.
Getting the veteran this offseason raised a few eyebrows. The Cowboys proved their gamble was worth it as Dak Prescott suffered a season-ending ankle injury earlier this month. Dalton was signed to be a backup quarterback, but he could be out for the season as well.
Dalton suffered a nasty hit on the head after Washington linebacker Jon Bostic delivered a blow fierce enough to knock his helmet off. He was helped off the field and did not return to the game. Bostic, meanwhile, was immediately ejected in the aftermath of the play.
The injury of the Cowboys QB added to the team's woes this season. According to USA Today, Dallas is already without Prescott, and joining him on the sidelines are Gerald McCoy, Blake Jarwin and Leighton Vander Esch.
Losing Dalton was a big blow for Dallas. According to CBS Sports, the 32-year-old is one of only six quarterbacks who have recorded 30,000 pass yards, 200 pass touchdowns and 70 wins. The other five who achieved the feat were Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Matt Ryan and Ben Roethlisberger.
Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy, meanwhile, expected a different response from his team after the illegal hit on Dalton. He expected Dallas players to stand up for their injured teammate, but no one dared to approach Bostic.
Should the players have confronted the Washington defender after the dirty play? Prescott suggested that retaliating could lead to more ejections for Dallas but also admitted the Cowboys should have exhibited a stronger reaction.
Without the starting and backup quarterback, the task of leading the offense now falls on rookie Ben DiNucci. With a 2-5 win-loss record, the pressure mounts on Dallas if they can still turn things around.
