Angela Bassette has earned an Academy Award nomination this year.
Bassett has earned a nomination for her portrayal of Queen Ramonda in the MCU's "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever." The nomination is the studio's first-ever acting nomination, Entertainment Weekly reported.
She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. In the film, she played the grieving queen following the loss of her son T'Challa, played by the late actor Chadwick Boseman.
It wasn't the first Academy Award nomination for the award-winning actress. She was nominated in 1994 for her performance as Tina Turner in "What's Love Got to Do With It."
The "Black Panther" sequel didn't score a Best Picture nomination, unlike its predecessor. However, it earned five nominations, including Best Costume Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Visual Effects. Rihanna's original soundtrack song "Lift Me Up" also scored a nomination.
Bassett's Oscar acting nomination is a big achievement for the studio. According to EW, Marvel films have a long history at the Oscars for scoring nominations in technical categories but not acting.
Meanwhile, rival studio DC Films had notable performances in acting categories. Both Heather Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix won Oscars for playing Joker in the "Batman" franchise.
Marvel Entertainment announced the MCU star's Academy Award nomination on Twitter to congratulate Bassett.
"Congratulations to Angela Bassett for her Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Marvel Studios' Black Panther: #WakandaForever! #OscarsNom," the studio wrote.
The post received several responses, with many hoping she would win the category because they were impressed with her performance in the superhero movie.
"Well deserved! Stellar performance in the film!" one commented. Another added, "Incredibly well deserved."
"Oh, she snatching all of these," a third person wrote.
Bassett's nomination wasn't a huge surprise. Several viewers predicted she would score an Oscar nomination for her impressive performance in the movie.
"Angela Bassett has to be the first Marvel actress to win an Oscar," one tweeted.
"Angela Bassett is incredible in #WakandaForever I will be pretty surprised if she doesn't get an Oscar nom," another added.
The 95th Academy Awards will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. It will air Sunday, March 12, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on ABC.
