Italian goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino, who blocked Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty last year, has revealed Juventus forward’s reaction claiming that a furious Ronaldo snubbed a pre-match promise to trade shirts.
The incident took place last January when Sorrentino played for Serie A side, Chievo, who took on Ronaldo and his Juventus teammates.
The 41-year-old goalkeeper now plays for Italian eighth-tier side Cervo and as a striker. However, it was Sorrentino’s goals-stopping skills that left a perfectionist like Ronaldo furious even after Juventus won the match.
The Serie A champions triumphed in the match 3-0, courtesy of goals from Douglas Costa, Emre Can and Daniele Rugani. The same game saw Sorrentino saving Ronaldo’s penalty and the goal-stopper claimed that made the former Real Madrid superstar angry.
“We agreed to exchange our shirts, but after missing the penalty he was very angry. It had never happened to him in Italy. In the changing room tunnel we met, he gave me a handshake and congratulated me, but he had a bad face, and he didn’t give me his shirt,” Sorrentino told Sky Sports Italy.
However, in the end, it was all good for the goalkeeper, who switched the kits with another Juventus superstar. “In the end, I took [Paulo] Dybala’s. It went well anyway,” Sorrentino added.
Ronaldo, who started his club career with Sporting Lisbon, then moved to Manchester United followed by Real Madrid, where he spent some of his most glorious years having won four UEFA Champions League titles, two La Liga trophies and three FIFA Club World Cups.
Overall, Ronaldo has so far clinched five Champions League titles (his first trophy came with Man Utd) and five Ballon d’Or awards, one behind his arch-rival Lionel Messi. From 838 club appearances so far, the Portuguese forward has netted as many as 626 times and for Portugal, he is one goal away from registering a century.
