Anissa Meksen Off ONE Fight Night 6 After No-Showing Pre-Fight Testing Window
KEY POINTS
- Anissa Meksen was removed from ONE Fight Night 6 after no-showing weigh-in and hydration test
- Meksen was scheduled to face Stamp Fairtex in a hybrid MMA-Muay Thai bout
- Rodtang Jitmuangnon and Ekaterina Vandaryeva also missed weight
ONE Fight Night 6 on Friday, January 13 (Saturday, January 14 in Asia) will go on without one of its most anticipated bouts after French-Algerian striker Anissa Meksen opted not to show up during the event's official weigh-in and hydration tests on Thursday, January 12.
Meksen was scheduled to face Thai two-sport champion Stamp Fairtex in a hybrid mixed martial arts (MMA)-Muay Thai super-fight on the undercard of ONE Championship's first offering for 2023, which is set to take place at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.
The 34-year-old was nowhere to be seen as competitors all took to the scale and subjected themselves to hydration testing as part of the mandatory pre-fight clearance.
At the end of the weight and hydration testing window, Ric Auty—ONE Championship's director of competition—announced that due to her absence, Meksen had been taken off the fight card.
"Anissa Meksen has missed the weight and hydration testing window, and will therefore not be competing at ONE Fight Night 6," the official stated.
Stamp, for her part, passed both weight and hydration tests.
Meksen's absence during the weigh-in and hydration testing is an unfortunate development to what would have been an exciting matchup between two of the best women's fighters in the world today.
Earlier this week, company chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong also announced that Meksen and Stamp would face each other again, this time for the interim ONE atomweight kickboxing championship later this year. Now, it's unclear whether or not Meksen will remain as part of the equation.
Hours after the window, Meksen took to social media to explain her absence.
"I want to clarify because [of the] speculation. I'm not sick, I'm fine and I wasn't overweight either. I got a family problem. This is the first time that this happened to me in 23 years of [my] career," Meksen wrote in her native tongue on Instagram. "I've always been a pro. I've never missed a weigh-in because I was injured or sick. Nothing can stop me, you know. Unfortunately, I have no choice."
Meksen continued by apologizing to her team as well as to Stamp.
Thursday morning's testing window also saw two more casualties, with Rodtang Jitmuangnon and Ekaterina Vandaryeva both missing weight.
Rodtang failed to make the contracted weight for his flyweight kickboxing bout against Jiduo Yibu, but the two have agreed to meet at a 136.5-pound catchweight.
Vandaryeva didn't also meet the agreed 125-pound limit for her encounter with Anna Jaroonsak.
Vandaryeva vs. Jaroonsak will likely proceed as a catchweight contest.
The rest of the card will go forward as scheduled, headlined by a world title triple-header.
Superbon Singha Mawynn and Chingiz Allazov are set to go head-to-head for the ONE featherweight kickboxing championship, whereas Superlek Kiatmoo9 and Daniel Puertas will battle each other for the vacant ONE flyweight kickboxing title.
Plus, Mikey Musumeci meets with Gantumur Bayanduuren for the ONE flyweight submission grappling belt.
Also in the lineup is former two-division ONE champion Aung La N Sang, who meets Gilberto Galvao in a catchweight showdown.
Meanwhile, former world title contender Garry Tonon returns to the Circle to face Johnny Nunez.
