'Ant-Man' Movie Spoilers: Who Is Yellowjacket? First Look At Villain In Upcoming Marvel Film

While much of the buzz from Marvel surrounds the recently released “Avengers: Age of Ultron” trailer, its second film of 2015, “Ant-Man” is still teasing fans with what they can expect from the upcoming origin story. Now, Marvel has released concept art for the film’s main villain, Yellowjacket.

Every hero needs a villain. Batman had the Joker, The Avengers had Loki and Ant-Man will have Darren Cross (Corey Stoll). Based on the first trailer for the movie, we know that Cross is the head of a large organization that Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) desperately wants to keep his technology away from. We don’t know why Pym is so afraid to work with Cross, but this decked-out version of the Ant-Man suit now gives us a clue.

The artwork, by Jackson Sze, gives fans their first look at what the fully realized Yellowjacket suit will look like. Although it’s only concept art that’s subject to change, its official release by Marvel should prove that the studio doesn’t plan to alter the design too much. As The Hollywood Reporter points out, the suit looks a lot like a variation of the “Ant-Man” technology that has been highly weaponized. Perhaps that’s what Pym wants Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) to help him avoid.

It’s hard to tell exactly what the Yellowjacket’s origin story will be. Normally in Marvel movies, fans can simply check the comic book source material for potential spoilers, but “Ant-Man” is going completely rouge in this case. In the comic book universe, a younger, less feeble Hank Pym takes on the title of Yellowjacket after Scott Lang steals his Ant-Man suit. Lang needs the technology so he can rescue his daughter who is being held captive by -- you guessed it -- Darren Cross. Still, Cross never actually dons the costume or title himself. When the mission is a success, Pym lets Lang keep his “Ant-Man” title and becomes Yellowjacket.

According to Marvel’s official character synopsis, Scott Lang goes on to have an interesting career. It involves several team ups with “The Avengers” as well as a relationship with Jessica Jones. The latter character was recently introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe by way of a Netflix Original series, which will air sometime later in 2015. While Marvel has already laid out its plans for movies in Phase 3, it’s possible that Scott Lang won’t be limited to just the movies.

Marvel’s “Ant-Man” hits theaters July 17. In the meantime, check out the first trailer for the movie below:
