Anthony Davis 'Fine' After Injury Scare As Lakers Draw Closer To Finals Return
KEY POINTS
- Anthony Davis had an injury scare during the Lakers' 114-108 win over the Nuggets on Thursday in Game 4
- The superstar big man says the injury is "not that bad"
- The Lakers are now a win away from their first Finals entry since 2010
There is nothing to worry about, says Anthony Davis, as the All-Star big man insisted that his ankle injury is not as serious as how it looked when he went down in pain during the fourth quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers 114-108 win over the Denver Nuggets in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals Thursday.
"Ankle feels fine. I got tonight, tomorrow, before the (next) game to get it (better),” Davis told reporters after the game, per Spectrum SN’s Mike Trudell, as the Lakers take a commanding 3-1 series lead to move on the cusp of a Finals return.
“(I rolled it) pretty bad, but not too bad … I’ll be fine,” the 27-year-old added.
The Lakers had to hold their breath as they watched Davis in pain while grabbing his left ankle midway through the payoff period following an awkward landing from an attempted jump shot.
The play had been investigated for a possible flagrant before the video review revealed that it was a non-contact sequence, although a regular foul was still slapped on Paul Millsap.
A serious injury on Davis would have been a massive blow for the Lakers and their bid for the chip. Hence, the agony immediately turned to relief when they saw the 6’10 bruiser shake off the scare as he headed towards the free-throw line to take his freebies.
It was a solid performance overall for Davis as he top-scored the Lakers with 34 points on 10-of-15 shooting. LeBron James, meanwhile, flirted with a triple-double as he scattered 26 points, nine boards, and eight dimes.
"We played great down the stretch, we played great overall," Davis said, via ESPN. "Still some things that we can fix if we want to put this thing away."
Frank Vogel tweaked his starting line up with Dwight Howard tasked to take the center spot, replacing JaVale McGee. The adjustment yielded quick dividends as the veteran big man set the tone early for the Lakers and was a key factor in putting Nikola Jokic in foul trouble.
Howard finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds while shooting 83% from the field in 22 minutes.
The Nuggets are once again paced by Jamal Murray, who exploded for 32 points and eight assists – all of which simply went for naught.
"We just had so many breakdowns throughout the game," Murray said. "We've just got to be better."
The Lakers will gun for the series clincher in Game 5 set on Saturday.
