KEY POINTS

  • Anthony Edwards is now second in most 40-point games before age 21
  • The Atlanta native scores a career-high 49 points to down the Spurs, 129-121
  • Edwards also issues a warning to those who would look past them in the playoffs

The Minnesota Timberwolves is on the verge of creating something special, and second-year player Anthony Edwards is the spark of it all.

Edwards made sure that his team is ready for all possibilities in the coming postseason after lighting up the San Antonio Spurs to the tune of a career-high 49 points on 6-of-14 three-pointers against the play-in-bound San Antonio Spurs.

The Atlanta, Georgia native had a field goal percentage of 57.1 for the night and added six rebounds, eight assists plus a steal to just two turnovers in 39 minutes of action to pull away from the Spurs in a 129-121 victory.

Edwards’ performance puts him in solo second for most 40-point games before age 21, three games behind Los Angeles Lakers star and all-time great LeBron James who did the feat eight times before he reached the legal drinking age in the US.

The No. 1 overall selection of the 2020 NBA draft has only gotten better in all facets of the game after being snubbed for Rookie of the Year honors, losing out to No. 3 pick LaMelo Ball of the Charlotte Hornets despite having a statistically better season.

It may have been due to Edwards being on the same team as All-Stars Karl-Anthony Towns and D’Angelo Russell, but he has since proven that notion to be false.

This season, Edwards is putting up career-highs across the board and it is worth noting that he is doing all of this in fewer games compared to his rookie year.

“I feel like we got everything we need. I feel like we’re going to make a real good run in the playoffs and they need to be ready for us,” Edwards said in the postgame interview with Bally Sports North.

While many would like to overlook the Timberwolves as threats in the playoffs, Edwards is out to prove that his team is no longer the franchise that was the perennial laughingstock of the league.

With the fans cheering on Edwards’ vote of confidence in his team, he fired one more warning before heading off into the tunnel to prepare for their regular-season closeout game against the Chicago Bulls on Sunday, April 10 at home.

“We’re coming. I just want you all (the fans) to be here. Pack the stands, we’re coming,” he stated.
