A popular New York City bagel shop banned a woman from their store after she refused to put on a mask and called a staff member a racial slur.
This incident, which occurred Sunday, was recorded by a bystander, and the footage was shared by the New York Post.
The anti-masker, who was attempting to order bagels at the Davidovich Bakery inside the Essex Market, refused to put on a mask even after the staff repeatedly requested her. She had come into the shop with her four children.
The footage shows a security guard trying to make the woman understand she wouldn't be served by the bakery worker unless she wears a mask, Radio.com reported.
The woman then responds by saying, “Why? ‘Cause he’s a b—h-ass n—-r, is that why?”
When people called her out for using a racial slur, she says, “I can call him whatever I want.”
Jack Weir, a 24-year-old tax accountant who had recorded the video, said the woman was claiming to have a medical exemption that allowed her to not wear a mask.
Calling the incident "pretty wild," he told the New York Post it was shocking to see how the woman escalated things to that level in front of her own kids.
Weir said it was “the most outright racist thing I’ve ever seen,” and added the employee did well despite what happened.
Davidovich Bakery’s vice president, Marc Fintz-Davidovich, has commended the worker for being brave and behaving calmly. He told the New York Post the unidentified woman wouldn’t be able to enter any of their establishments in the future.
Fintz-Davidovich said whether the woman liked or disliked having to wear a mask, attacking someone like that is “really unbelievable.” He added controlling what comes out of the mouths of anyone is impossible, but they won’t tolerate any racism, the New York Post reported.
A New York City Economic Development Corporation spokesperson said the woman did not leave until the police were contacted.
