KEY POINTS

  • Apple acquires virtual reality company NextVR
  • Apple bent on shifting to virtual reality technology
  • Apple could draw inspiration from Valve's VR success

Just recently, it was suggested that Apple was dead serious about investing in virtual reality solutions. Ming-Chi Kuo revealed how the Cupertino company was working on some kind of augmented reality headset called Apple Glass. The earliest possible time to see that was 2022.

In a previous post, it was described how these Apple Glasses would look like. The would look fairly similar to Facebook's Oculus Quest but sporting a different design. The headset is expected to support high-resolution displays and will most likely be hooked to an iPhone or even an iPad. But the key thing to note here is that the Apple Glass is likely to be a lightweight device.

While that would be something, it remains that there are a lot of loose ends. Does that include who would be behind the virtual reality setup if the Apple Glass is indeed coming in 2022? The answer to that came recently following a report from Bloomberg that the Cupertino company had acquired NextVR, a startup company over in California behind virtual reality live events content. Rumors of Apple acquiring the company started to come out in April.

Details of the acquisition were not revealed as of this writing although some claim that it was roughly $100 million. NextVR is the third company that Apple has acquired for the year. Previously, they had purchased Voysis (a voice-tech company) and Dark Sky (a weather app).

With the new member of the Apple clan, it seems pretty clear that Apple is determined to make the jump to the virtual reality world. Seeing how NextVR is a live events company that provides live VR content in sports, concerts and so on, one can just imagine the possibilities that Apple has in mind. Gaming is likely to be at the top of the list with most video content now shifting towards that direction.

In another previous post, "Half-Life: Alyx" saw Steam VR user sales soar with millions now playing the game. Valve released an update for the game and the response was overwhelming. Aside from that, VR headsets sales soared, a probability for Apple as well if it plays it right. Thankfully, the Apple Glasses are not expected until 2022 - meaning the Cupertino company has all the time in the world to provide its loyal followers a new kind of technology that is gaining momentum.
