Apple iPad Air 2020: Specs, Price And Everything Else To Know

Apple has unveiled a slew of new products, including the new iPad Air. The refreshed model looks more like an iPad Pro and packs a host of improvements, most notably the new A14 Bionic chip.

The iPad Air 4 is more than just an upgrade to the existing models. It's a massive jump – from being a cheaper alternative to the more powerful iPad Pro to being more powerful than the iPad Pro. The new device, as The Verge puts it, “outshines” the more expensive tablet in a variety of ways.

A14 Bionic

The iPad Air 2020 is the first tablet to run on the company's latest chip, the A14 Bionic. Greg Joswiak, senior VP of worldwide marketing for Apple, said it's the “most powerful chip ever made,” capable of giving the new device “a massive boost in performance” and allowing it to offer “powerful pro features at an even more affordable price.”

According to Apple, the new chip inside the new iPad Air has six cores and offers up to 40% faster CPU performance compared to the chip inside the previous model. It also has a new 4-core graphics architecture, providing up to 30% improved graphics.

Affordable Price

While the iPad Pro currently sells for at least $799 for the 11-inch base model, the new iPad Air sells for at least $599. The $200 price difference means a lot, especially for those whose incomes have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Redesign

Apple redesigned the iPad Air 4 so that it will look like the iPad Pro, complete with an edge-to-edge display, a slim body and flat edges.

The new device also comes in five different finishes, giving consumers more options: silver, space gray, rose gold, green and sky blue.

Wider display

The new iPad Air has a 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display that boasts of True Tone, 3.8 million pixels, full lamination and an anti-reflective coating. It might not have the 120Hz high refresh rate that the iPad Pro offers, but it's not as expensive either.

Touch ID

Unlike the iPad Pro, the new iPad Air only offers Touch ID authentication via a sensor integrated into the top sensor. It doesn't have Face ID.

Camera

Lastly, while it doesn't have LiDAR. the new iPad Air uses the same 12MP rear camera used on the iPad Pro. It also has a 7MP front-facing FaceTime HD camera for selfies and video calls.

These, and many other improvements, make the new iPad Air a formidable tablet when placed against the iPad Pro and many other tablets in the market.
