KEY POINTS

  • Apple Music has a vast library of tracks
  • These tracks include songs with explicit lyrics
  • Users can turn explicit content off to enjoy clean songs

Apple Music has a huge library of tracks that subscribers can enjoy. This vast collection of music, however, contains songs that feature explicit lyrics. That said, there will be some users who will want to veer away from downloading and listening to such tracks. Thankfully, there's a way to do that.

Apple Music subscribers who don't like explicit lyrics, or those with kids at home, will be glad to know that there's a setting that prevents users from downloading songs containing offensive or harmful language, Apple Insider noted. This setting is hidden well within the app, but it's not that hard to access and use to filter song choices.

Here's how to turn off explicit content in Apple Music:

Via an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch

  • First, users will need to launch the Settings app.
  • Second, users will need to tap on Screen time.
  • Third, once there, users should tap on Content & Privacy Restrictions, then toggle it on.
  • Fourth, after that, users should tap on Content Restrictions.
  • Fifth, users should tap on Music, Podcasts & News, then tap on Clean.

When this feature is enabled, the system will restrict all Apple Music, Podcast and Apple News content to all-ages appropriate content only, which means it will limit content to what is deemed safe for younger users. This feature will restrict explicit content across Apple's services only, however, which means kids can still access explicit content via Safari or third-party apps such as YouTube.

What's more, this feature is not bound to a user's AppleID. This means users will need to enable the Clean feature for every device that they have.

Via macOS Catalina

  • First, users should open Music
  • Second, users should click on Music in the menu bar at the top of the screen.
  • Third, once there, users should click on Preferences, then on Restrictions in the window that appears.
  • Fourth, users should look for the Restrict section, then select Music with explicit content.
  • Fifth, users should confirm by clicking Restrict Explicit Content in the window that appears.

This will allow Apple Music users to enjoy clean music with every listening session. A commenter in Apple Insider's comments section noted that this feature works by re-downloading tracks to replace tracks with explicit lyrics with clean versions.
