Samsung may be the undisputed market leader when it comes to 5G smartphones. However, that is about to change with the arrival of the new 5G iPhone smartphones next year. The upcoming 5G iPhones will help Apple overtake Samsung as the market leader in the fast-growing 5G smartphone market in 2020.

The research firm Strategy Analytics, which provides advisory services and actionable market intelligence to many companies, projected that Apple’s entry into the 5G smartphone race in 2020 will bring the tech giant into the lead in 5G smartphone market. In fact, the research firm has published reports, titled Global 5G Smartphone Shipments Forecast by Vendor by Region by Quarter, from Device Technologies that show how Apple will lead the fast-emerging smartphone technology segment.

The Cupertino-based company has not yet launched 5G smartphones in the market. But, with plans for three new 5G smartphones next year, Apple may have a chance to capture a dominant share of the 5G smartphone market. The company will only need to match its current upgrade rates for newly released iPhone models to take the lead in the highly lucrative 5G smartphone market next year.

In addition to that, Apple also has a huge mobile presence in both the United States and Chinese markets. These two countries are currently the biggest 5G markets in the world.

Apple is adding 5G smartphones in its 2020 portfolio in order to compete with those lower-cost Android smartphones that come with 5G support. The company is expected to release three new iPhone models in 2020, MacRumors reported.

Though Apple is expected to be big in the 5G smartphone market in 2020, Strategic Analytics still believes that Samsung will be the 5G smartphone leader longterm due to the company's broader portfolio of 5G devices across more price-bands and its overwhelming dominance of the global smartphone market.

Like Apple, Huawei is also expected to be a major 5G smartphone provider, especially in China where the company has a huge presence. However, Huawei will have trouble getting an expansion in the US mobile market due to the US trade ban.
