Fall’s most popular fruit is being recalled for possible listeria contamination this week. Crunch Pak issued a voluntary, nationwide recall alongside the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Thursday for more than 5,000 cases of its Crunch Pak Apple Slices.

According to a press release issued by the FDA, 5,471 cases of the fruity snack are being recalled for a possible listeria monocytogenes contamination, a potentially deadly organism for children and those with weakened immune systems that is also known to cause miscarriages and stillbirths. According to the report, healthy individuals exposed to listeria may also suffer fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, diarrhea and abdominal pain.

Despite the potential health risks, the FDA reported that no illness have been reported from the product.

“We are issuing this voluntary recall to reduce even the slightest risk to public health. There is nothing more important than the health and safety of those who enjoy our products,” said Tony Freytag, senior vice president of marketing at Crunch Pak in Cashmere, Wash., in a statement Thursday. “We have always been committed to food safety, and we will continue to make food safety a core competency of our company. We realize that food safety is a constant effort, and we are using this opportunity to further evaluate our food safety systems.”

According to the FDA’s report, the recall was issued after a random 14-ounce sample of Crunch Pak’s Tart Apple Slices tested positive for the microbe in a test by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.
