Apple is reportedly silently selling a new, unannounced LG UltraFine display in select retail stores.

According to TidBITS, Apple is quietly selling a new 23.7-inch LG UltraFine Display that the Cupertino tech giant, as well as the Korean tech company, did not announce anywhere, including their respective websites.

A writer for TidBITS was looking to purchase the soon-to-be-discontinued 21.5-inch LG UltraFine 4K display and went to the nearby Apple Store near his location to get one. He said this monitor is already listed as “sold out” in Apple’s online store, but was still available for purchase personally via retail stores.

To his surprise, an employee at the local Apple Store told him to forego buying the aforementioned 21.5-inch UltraFine Display, which was sold for $699.95, because the store had something better:

“Because we have a larger LG display for the same price,” the employee told him.

Verification

The TidBITS writer noted that the monitor wasn’t on display at the Apple Store. It was merely shown to him after the employee informed him of its existence. Surprised at what happened, he went to another Apple Store to verify if indeed Apple sells the said product.

To his amazement, the Apple employee didn’t know that there was such a product. The employee only discovered its existence after being asked, and after finding the SKU after checking the iPhone terminal.

Even more verification

The 23.7-inch LG UltraFine Display is nowhere to be found on both Apple and LG’s websites, and it doesn’t show up anywhere on the internet.

A quick search of the device’s model number 24MD4KL, however, reveals an FCC ID (application dated Oct. 17, 2018) and an Energy Star Certification that reveals it is intended for sale in the United States, Switzerland, Taiwan, Japan, and Canada.

Features

According to a downloadable manual found by 9To5Mac, the display resolution is 3840 by 2160 pixels, which qualifies as 4K resolution. It cannot be considered a Retina display, however, as it only has a pixel density of 200.26 ppi -- lower than the 218 ppi found in Apple’s Retina iMacs. It has two Thunderbolt 3 ports and three USB-C ports at the back.
