A global supply manager for Apple Inc pleaded not guilty on Monday to charges of accepting kickbacks from Asian companies that supplied iPhone and iPod accessories.

Paul Devine, in handcuffs and wearing an orange prison shirt, appeared in federal court in San Jose, California, with his lawyer.

Prosecutors argued that Devine, who has worked at the technology company since 2005, is a flight risk and should not be granted bail. U.S. Magistrate Howard Lloyd set another bail hearing for Wednesday.

Devine, 37, also faces a civil lawsuit filed by Cupertino, California-based Apple, which contends he received more than $1 million in payments and bribes over several years.

He is accused of using his position at Apple to get confidential information that he shared with Apple suppliers to help them negotiate favorable contracts with the company.
