- The app will require users to have certain devices and subscriptions
Google has released the new YouTube Music app for the Apple Watch, allowing those who use Apple's wearable device to gain easy access and control over their favorite music.
Smartwatch users who prefer to listen to their favorite music using YouTube Music, previously known as Google Play Music, will be glad to know that Google has released a simple app for the Apple Watch.
The new app for the Apple Watch will grant YouTube Music users easy access and playback controls to listen to their favorite music, whether they're inside their home or outside and on the go. The app works with the Apple Watch Series 3 or newer models, as long as the wearable device runs on watchOS 6 or later versions.
“Over the past few months, we’ve introduced some amazing new integrations for YouTube Music. From voice recommendations through Google Assistant to YouTube Music on smart TVs, we’re bringing your favorite music to wherever you’re listening,” Google said in the announcement.
“Starting today, we’re excited to extend the ways you listen to YouTube Music with the launch of a new YouTube Music app for Apple Watch!” it continued.
How it works
The YouTube Music app has its own complication — which means a watch function apart from telling time — for use with the Apple Watch. This complication will give users direct access to several things, including:
- Playback control
Tapping on the complication gives users added control regarding music playback. The controls include buttons for reverse, play/pause and skip.
- Recommendations
Google said the YouTube Music app will give music recommendations based on the user's listening habits. The App Store listing states that recommendations can also be given based on the user's taste, real-time location and time of day.
- Casting
Google also added a button that will allow users to cast the music that's being played on their phone directly to their speakers with a single tap.
- Like
Lastly, there's a small “like” button at the bottom-right corner of the playback control screen.
Aside from using the correct Apple Watch, the new YouTube Music app will also require users to have an iPhone and a YouTube Premium or YouTube Premium Music subscription.
