Apple currently holds patents which could add another feature to the Apple Watch series. The patent shows that the Apple Watch could detect muscle movements of its wearer and show features accordingly. This additional biometric feature could potentially revolutionize the smart watch with this feature.

As seen on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office record of Apple’s patented tech, the company can make a "systems and methods for determining axial orientation and location of a user's wrist." The patent’s design could potentially be added to the Apple Watch straps to further improve its features.

The patent states that the device would be able to extend its biometrics features to the strap. The strap would scan the user’s wrist using electromyography (EMG) sensors to help the device orient its position.

Once oriented, the Apple Watch would be able to work intelligently such as automatically lighting up its screen when the wrist detects that the screen could be visible to the user’s eyes. The EMG sensors could also detect how the user’s muscles work t

Other than just helping the device orient itself, the biometric EMG sensors could also be used to track the information about user’s health. The straps could be able to detect the muscle stress of the user and measure it as the intensity of their exercise.

However, the patent said that the strap needs to be in contact with the skin to work properly. Potentially, Apple still needs to work on this patent to make it more comfortable for users.

As of now, most smart watches often only have the watch part to contain all of its wiring and technology. Apple, and even its smart watch rivals, have yet to fully commit into adding features on the straps of smart phone.

So far, smart watch straps still function like its analog watch predecessors as it could be replaced with watch straps of similar size and length. More than part of the smart watch’s features, the straps are the decorative part of the device and can be easily replaced as much as the owner wants to.

For now, we’ve yet to know if Apple will make this smart watch strap technology into reality. Many of Apple’s patents are rarely made into actual products.
