Following the success of the first film, James Wan will be returning to helm “Aquaman 2.” The director is currently busy with some of his other projects, and the fans will have to wait for a few years before the movie is released.

“Aquaman” is one DC’s most successful superhero movies. However, the studio appears to be in no hurry to make the sequel. According to Variety, the producers are hoping to start filming by early 2021.

While the wait for the sequel is going to be a long one, there is also some good news. DC is planning to make a spin-off movie called “The Trench,” which will be about the undersea creatures that were introduced in the first film from the franchise.

DC is currently looking for a director for the spin-off. The studio hasn’t announced a release date for the movie yet.

Wan is currently busy with the filming of “Malignant,” which is a story about a cancer patient discovering that he has been infected by an alien parasite that grants him otherworldly powers. He will also be directing an episode for “The Magic Order” TV series.

Meanwhile, David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick will be writing the script for “Aquaman 2,” The Wrap reported earlier this year. Johnson-McGoldrick wrote the script for the 2018 movie with Will Beall. He has also worked with Wan on “The Conjuring” movies.

Details about the plot of the upcoming movie aren’t yet known. In a previous interview with Esquire, cast member Jason Momoa, who plays the titular role, revealed that he had some ideas about where the story should go, and the studio executives loved it. The actor “mapped out” his character’s journey when he pitched the idea, and it remains to be seen if this will be used as the base for the script.

“Aquaman 2” will be released on Dec. 16, 2022.
