HBO Max is WarnerMedia’s entry into the hotly contested streaming market, and after Tuesday’s major presentation, it’s looking like a major contender. While its $14.99-a-month price tag is a lot higher than its competitors, with 10,000 hours of content at launch, including popular shows like “Friends,” “South Park,” and “Rick & Morty,” it might just be worth it for many consumers.

Like with the Verizon Unlimited and Disney+ deal, certain AT&T and HBO customers will be able to get HBO Max for free at launch. Unlike said Verizon-Disney deal, the HBO Max promo is a little bit more complicated.

Here’s what to know about getting the new service for free.

The key to getting HBO Max if already subscribing to another HBO service is to be billed directly for the service. This means that all HBO Now subscribers will be eligible for the deal, but not anyone who accesses HBO through a cable provider or a third-party provider, like Amazon Prime Video or Apple TV – at least, not yet. HBO Max’s official site hints that they may be working on ways for these latter customers to get the deal.

"If your HBO NOW subscription is billed through a third-party subscription provider [or a cable or TV provider], stay tuned for more details as we get closer to our launch date," the HBO Max site states.

Those who access HBO through one of AT&T’s video services will also be eligible for this HBO Max promotion. The specific services that HBO Max has singled out include AT&T TV and U-Verse TV. Additionally, those who get wireless internet or mobile carrier services through AT&T will be eligible for special HBO Max bundles.

HBO Max will launch in the U.S. in May 2020. It will include offerings from Warner Bros, MGM, Criterion, Adult Swim, CrunchyRoll and HBO.
