An Arizona woman who went through a total of 19 miscarriages has successfully given birth to a baby that was twice the weight of a regular newborn.
Cary Patonai gave birth to a healthy, 14-pound baby on Oct. 10, ABC 15 Arizona reported. The average weight of a newborn is around half that number, according to the outlet.
Patonai and her husband, Tim, unsuccessfully tried to have another child since last year prior to the delivery of the now 10-day-old Finnley. They were eager to have another one despite already having two sons. The couple went through two miscarriages along the way and suffered 17 other pregnancies before they had their first child, who is now 2 years old.
Two of those miscarriages were particularly difficult as they were sets of twins, according to Cary.
The couple, however, continued to push forward despite their experiences and was able to conceive baby Finnley.
"They were like, 'Oh my god, I can't believe he's so big.' They couldn't wait to get him on the scale," Cary recalled.
Finnley reportedly impressed doctors since he did not only weigh more than the average newborn, he was also taller at nearly 24 inches.
A doctor and one of the nurse at the hospital even asked to take selfies with the Cary and her baby because "they were just so pumped up," according to the mother.
Finnley's unexpected size made his parents realize the clothes they picked for him were not going to cut it, with the infant's prepared size 0 to 3 months homecoming outfit not even close to fitting him.
The newest member to Cary and Tim's family is now sporting a onesie meant for babies six to nine months old. Additionally, he is already wearing size two diapers.
Finnley's big brothers, who allegedly weighed in at 11.1 and 8.2 pounds at birth, respectively, may have foreshadowed their newest sibling's size.
"When [my other baby] was born, he was my doctor's top five of the biggest. And I was like, 'just you wait, I'm gonna get to the top of the list," [while] totally joking two years ago. And then we accidentally did it," Cary said.
Tim said that one friend told him Finnley might end up becoming a football player due to his size
“Get him in those pads,” the father added.
