‘Arrow’ Season 5 Spoilers: Stephen Amell Wants Less Magic Next Year
“Arrow” Season 5 may be a little less magical than the latest season of the CW drama. In the Season 4 finale, the Green Arrow took on Damien Darhk. Oliver managed to render Darhk powerless, eventually killing him. Fans shouldn’t expect to see the villain again (at least not right away), and it looks like mystical forces might be gone as well.
“When we started ‘Arrow,’ we were the superpower-less superhero show,” Green Arrow actor Stephen Amell told Entertainment Weekly. “Because of our success and because of opportunities that the CW has had, we’ve had to break away from that original modus operandi a little bit.”
Obviously, “Arrow” had to aid the introduction of “The Flash” and “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” but, in the case of “Supergirl,” Amell’s series doesn’t really need to help the former CBS show establish itself on the CW. That means “Arrow” can get back to basics.
“I think as a result of that, we need to get back to focusing more on some of the core elements that used to define ‘Arrow,’” Amell explained. “To me, that’s hand-to-hand combat, no superpowers, and dealing with the job of cleaning up Star City.”
The “Arrow” Season 4 finale didn’t really set up a villain for the fall. Instead, Oliver and Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) seemed to be the only ones left in Star City as the rest of the team went their separate ways. The heroes will apparently come back together — only to have their relationship threatened.
“Sinister players with a connection to Oliver’s past will push the team to its breaking point, threatening everything Oliver’s worked for and his legacy as the Green Arrow,” the CW’s official Season 5 description reads.
The big bad of Season 5 won’t be tearing the team apart with magic, though. “As far as I know, they don’t have superpowers. I’ll tell you that,” Amell teased to Variety. However, that still leaves plenty of possibilities for fans to speculate about all summer long.
“Arrow” Season 5 will premiere on the CW in the fall.
