Arsenal Legend Names Premier League Superstar Who's Better Than Lionel Messi
KEY POINTS
- Paul Merson says Harry Kane plays better than Lionel Messi
- Kane has been statistically better than Messi this season
- Tottenham legend Micky Hazard hails Kane as the best player in the world
Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson thinks Lionel Messi can’t do the things Harry Kane has been doing for Tottenham Hotspur.
In modern soccer, Kane and Messi are considered the best players who can play the No. 9 and 10 on the pitch. However, for the ex-Arsenal star, who has also been known as an attacker and a midfielder, the Tottenham standout has proven that he is better than the six-time Ballon d’Or winner.
“Name me one player in the world who can be a No. 9, score goals, hold the ball up, be strong, and then go and play No 10, and put 60-yard balls through the eye of a needle, or run at the ball with pace with defenders all around you before picking out a ball to assist,” Merson said on Sky Sports.
“There’s nobody in the world like him [Kane],” the former Gunner continued. “There’s no other player in the world who can be as good as a No. 9, and as good as a No. 10. I don’t think there ever has. Lionel Messi cannot go up front, hold the ball up, bring people into play, and then score bundles of goals, and then go and play No 10 in the same game. He’s a No 10. Kane can do both.”
Merson’s statement is backed by Kane’s numbers this season. The 27-year-old has been consistent in his goalscoring while spontaneously playing the No. 10.
So far, Kane has already bagged seven goals and provided nine assists in nine English Premier League matches to go along with one goal and one assist in two Europa League games.
On the other hand, Messi is three goals behind Kane, scoring four goals for Barcelona this season.
As for playmaking, the England captain is way ahead of the Argentine, who hasn’t completed a single assist yet in Barca’s 2020-21 campaign.
Prior to Tottenham’s goalless draw with Chelsea on Sunday, Kane impressed in the Spurs’ back-to-back wins over Manchester City and Ludogorets.
In the 2-0 victory against the Citizens, the English striker pulled off a sensational goal and was also instrumental in registering co-star Son Heung-min into the scoring ledger.
Thrilled by Kane’s spectacular display, former Tottenham star Micky Hazard hailed Jose Mourinho’s talisman as the “best player in the world.”
“What a performance what a three points, Harry Kane has to be the best player in the world at this moment in time, hes got absolutely everything,” Hazard tweeted.
