  • Mikel Arteta admits Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is someone he wants to keep
  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang continues to play well, attracting interest from other teams
  • Arteta sitting on pins and needles until Aubameyang is secured

The future of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang remains unknown though there are feelers that he is likely to stay at Emirates Stadium. However, until the time comes when the Gabon captain signs on the dotted line, Gunners coach Mikel Arteta will be sitting on pins and needles.

Considering Aubameyang has been performing well as of late, there is the reason for Arteta to worry. Some other clubs may ramp up their interest, possibly offering better offers than what the Gunners are giving. Arteta admits that when he talked about uncertain things, one of them was Aubameyang.

“When I was talking about the uncertain things that we have on the table, obviously he is one of them,” Arteta said via Sky Sports.

Hence, all Arteta can do right now is wait for Arsenal management to make its move. He admits that he is not part of the contract negotiations but his desire to keep the Gabonese player is likely to factor in.

“With Auba, I think I’ve been very clear with what I want. The quicker we do it for me personally the better because the player will be more focused, more determined and more calm, but we have to respect the timings as well and the needs that the football club has,” Arteta said.

All the Gunners can do right now is try and prove to the 31-year-old forward that Arsenal is the place to be. The feeling seems to be mutual with Aubameyang shining in recent games. Unfortunately, that performance can also be seen as an audition for other teams who may be interested in him.

Contract talks have been ongoing since before the COVID-19 pandemic. Discussions bogged down for obvious reasons but a deal should be on the table soon. Aubameyang has not directly shown any indication of wanting out. He even teased on social media recently about staying at Emirates Stadium. Though it was a light moment, it could also be a sign of things to come.

It is believed that Aubameyang wants a long-term deal. At his age, this is not surprising. The Gabon national knows that this could be the last chance for him to negotiate for a good contract. Arsenal will likely take this into consideration as well. The only question right now is when will the deal be sealed.
