KEY POINTS
- Jack Wilshere befuddled why Mesut Ozil is in the doghouse
- Ozil could be a big compliment to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
- Wilshere had the chance to play in the past and knows what the German is capable of
On any given day and if he plays with his heart out, there is no question that Mesut Ozil could provide Arsenal F.C. with much-needed help. Unfortunately, the German continues to sit out matches with Mikel Arteta keeping him in cold storage. In the eyes of former Gunners player Jack Wilshere, there may be something going on that most are not unaware of.
Speaking to TalkSPORT, Wilshere is baffled by the fact that the 31-year-old is not playing. Ozil has not seen action since the football restart and 28-year-old player who now plays for West Ham feels that there is something up over at Emirates Stadium.
Wilshere should know. There was a time when he played alongside Ozil and he is aware of the things that the German can do if fielded in. He sees Ozil a perfect complement to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
“Especially with Aubameyang, the type of player he is, you can imagine Ozil sat behind him feeding him balls. It would be unbelievable," Wilshere said. “It’s obviously something that we don’t know about. I’m sure Arteta has definitely got a plan and he’s putting that into practice."
The West Ham midfielder that an explanation on why Ozil has been kept out may be known in the next couple of weeks. Other than that, Wilshere believes that keeping Aubameyang will be critical. He acknowledged what the Gabon national brings to the table. He admits that if he were in Aubameyang's shoes, he would stay at Emirates Stadium.
“If I was him I’d stay, but it’s easy for me to say that. Listen, as I said, it’s important they keep him because he’s their go-to man, he’s their best player, he’s their leader," Wilshere said.
Right now, Arteta has a lot on his plate. The future of Ozil and Aubameyang remains uncertain although the priority is the latter. The Gunners plan to offer the Gabon captain a new deal but there is no assurance he will immediately accept it.
As for Ozil, his future remains afloat. Though he plans to play out the rest of his deal, a transfer could be coming to stretch the Gunners' budget. He has gotten offers but the German allegedly prefers to stay in Europe.
