ARSENAL TRANSFER NEWS: Eriksen, Vertonghen, Hernanes, Van Persie, Mertesacker Involved In Latest Rumors
Looking to build on an impressive second-half of the season, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is reportedly targeting Ajax duo Jan Vertonghen and Christian Eriksen, according to Caught Offside.
Belgian center-back Vertonghen has been linked with a move to the Emirates for some time and has even expressed his desire to make the switch.
Arsenal are a magnificent club and I hear a lot of good things about English football,Vertonghen said, according to the Daily Mail.
If a club of Arsenal's caliber can reach agreement with Ajax, then I will gladly go over.
I have instructed my agent carefully. 'He knows which clubs I want to join, and Arsenal are one of them.
Vertonghen, 24, should be able to adapt quickly to life at Arsenal having previously played with Thomas Vermaelen at Ajax. Though, with Vermaelen and Laurent Koscielny forming an increasingly impressive partnership in the center of defense there is some doubt as to whether Wenger will invest heavily in that area.
Although a position in Arsenal's roster could open up if reports linking Per Mertesacker with a move away from the club are to be believed.
The German defender, who is out for the rest of the season with an ankle injury, will be allowed to leave in the summer, according to a report in the Daily Mirror.
Another hot-property of Ajax that is reportedly interesting Wenger is talented Danish attacking midfielder Christian Eriksen. The 20-year-old has been tipped as one of the future stars of world soccer for a while now, especially since becoming the youngest player to perform at the 2010 World Cup.
However, speculation of Arsenal moving for the player comes at a strange time, with Eriksen recently appearing to commit his near-future to Ajax.
I don't see the need for a move at the moment. I feel very much at home here and there is plenty I can still learn, he said, according to ESPN.
If a move for Eriksen fails, it could be that Wenger swoops for fellow offensive midfielder Hernanes. The Brazilian has been linked with a switch to the Gunners from his current club Lazio in recent days by the Daily Mail.
The Brazilian appears to have fallen out of favor with his coach Edy Reja as Stefano Mauri has flourished in the No. 10 role for Lazio of late.
But after impressing in Rome since the 26-year-old's move from Sao Paulo in 2010, he is sure to be in high demand if he moves to pastures new this off-season. Indeed Arsenal's Premier League rivals, Liverpool and Tottenham, are also said to be interested.
Arsenal's transfer business this summer is going to be key for the club's future, not least because it could have a huge impact on Robin van Persie's decision on whether to sign a new contract.
And former Gunners defender Sol Campbell has said today that big signings will be needed in order to keep the Premier League's top scorer at the Emirates.
Van Persie's had an unbelievable season, Campbell said, according to the Metro.
Arsenal need a few more players who want to take on the challenge, who are going to say 'I'm going to make the difference this season.'
If they don't buy players he's going to go, I think he's going to feel there's a lack of ambition at the club.
