  • He missed 39 games last season due to an injury
  • Gomez is yet to regain full fitness

Liverpool FC have reportedly received an offer for defender Joe Gomez ahead of the 2022 January transfer window.

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, who recently was appointed the manager of Aston Villa, wants Gomez at Villa Park but the Reds are not looking to sell the English defender, reported Italian publication Calciomercato.

Gomez has spent the majority of the 2021-22 campaign on the bench. The player, who used to be a regular starter for Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool, missed 39 matches last season due to an injury. He has not regained his full fitness since then.

The 24-year-old has slipped down in Klopp's pecking order with the German boss preferring a center-back combination of Van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahim Konate for most of the matches this term.

Klopp, in a recent press conference, confirmed that he is not going to send any of his players on loan during the January market.

"It was not the best year for Joe with the injury and then coming back. We have not rushed his recovery or rehab. When you start playing and training again we had three or four 100% fit centre halves. We are patient and Joe is patient. And I don't have any plans to give anyone on loan in the winter. I will not be the driving force anyway. He still needs time to train to get to where he was before," Klopp said in a press conference Wednesday, according to Football365.

Gomez, who has been at Liverpool since 2015, has so far bagged a total of 131 competitive appearances for the Reds and played a crucial part in the side winning four trophies between 2019 and 2020, including the Champions League and Premier League.

Meanwhile, it was earlier reported that Liverpool have decided the club won't sign any unvaccinated players during the January window.

COVID-19 scare recently struck the Liverpool camp that saw Van Dijk, Fabinho, Curtis Jones and Thiago Alcantara miss the league game against Newcastle United on Dec. 16. While Liverpool won the game against the Magpies, the Reds were held at a controversial 2-2 draw at Tottenham and as a result, Liverpool fell three points behind table-toppers Manchester City in the 2021-22 Premier League.
