The town of Atherton in California’s Silicon Valley tops list of richest communities in the U.S. for a fourth straight year.
Atherton was named the richest place to live in the U.S. as part of Bloomberg’s 2020 “Richest Places Annual Index” that ranks the 100 richest communities in the U.S. Bloomberg determined its list by evaluating the average household income, adjusted for inflation, in locations with a minimum of 2,000 households based on the U.S. Census.
Atherton’s average household income is listed at $525,324, with the cheapest house in the town currently going for $2.5 million. Residents have included tech billionaires like former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg.
Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry bought a home in Atherton in 2019 for $31 million.
“Because of how big Facebook has gotten, and Google, we’ve kind of become this concept of the company town, where so many people work for these Silicon Valley companies,” Redwood City resident and real estate agent Elaine White told Bloomberg.
California towns Hillsborough and Los Altos Hills joined Atherton in the top 10 with average incomes of $430,681 and $405,073, respectively.
