Atlanta Falcons running back Michael Turner apologized to fans and his team regarding is driving under the influence arrest and charge Tuesday.

After Atlanta’s 27-21 win over the Denver Broncos Monday, the veteran was stopped by police later that night for speeding in Suwanee, Ga. He was arrested for a DUI after the officer on the scene smelled alcohol on Turner’s person and in his car.

“I’d like to apologize to Mr. [Arthur] Blank, Thomas Dimitroff, Mike Smith and the whole Falcons organization and the fans out there for the situation that I’m in right now,” Turner said to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. “It was a bad decision on my part. I can’t say too much about it in detail right now. I’m just trying to move forward from here.”

Turner was also reportedly driving 97 miles per hour, 32 miles above the speed limit.

In terms of the NFL’s disciplinary policies, this is Turner’s first offense and he may have to enter a substance abuse program. Any further incidents and he could face suspensions or fines.

Turner is expected to play Sunday as the Falcons travel to play the San Diego Chargers.

The Illinois native signed with Atlanta in 2008, and has rushed for 1,000-plus yards in three of his four seasons, missing five games in 2009. For his career, Turner has 6,612 rushing yards and 57 touchdowns.
