"I’m thrilled we’ll be doing a season four of ‘Atypical.’ And while I’m so sad to be nearing the end of this series, I am extremely grateful to have been able to tell this story," creator and showrunner Robia Rashid said. "Our fans have been such beautiful, vibrant supporters of this show. Thank you for being so open to Sam’s voice and stories, and those of the entire Gardner family.”

“It’s my hope that the legacy of ‘Atypical’ is that more unheard voices continue to be heard and that even after this series ends, we keep telling funny, emotional stories from underrepresented points of view,” Rashid's statement continued.

Fans of the Netflix show had a lot to say about the announcement, taking to Twitter to either lament about it or to praise the show for being a part of their streaming lives.

The story of “Atypical” follows Sam Gardner (Keir Gilchrist), a 19-year-old boy on the autism spectrum. The show details the daily trials and tribulations that come with his particular quirks, but with a funny, optimistic tone and a focus on the character’s loving family. Jennifer Jason Leigh, Michael Rapaport, and Brigette Lundy-Paine also star in the series.

At press time, it’s unclear if “Atypical” was canceled by Netflix or if Rashid always had four seasons in mind.

“Atypical” Season 4 will premiere on Netflix in 2021. In the meantime, all three seasons are now available to binge-watch on Netflix.
