Australian Open: Novak Djokovic's Father Shockingly Compares Son To 'Jesus' Amid Vaccine Saga
KEY POINTS
- Novak Djokovic stands firm on his take on vaccination ahead of the Australian Open
- The issue has caused a stir in Djokovic's home country with his family being largely involved
- The Serbian government has already expressed its support for Djokovic
Novak Djokovic’s father may have just made things a lot worse with his recent comments.
The Australian Open is fast approaching, but Djokovic’s vaccine drama is still at its peak, making it impossible for the tournament’s defending champion to retain his title.
It has been publicly known that Djokovic has failed to meet the Australian government’s entry rules.
Despite the issue evidently beginning to affect his career, the Serbian superstar still stands firm on his stance against being vaccinated.
For what it’s worth, Djokovic’s family decided to hold a press conference to protest against the Australian Border Force’s decision to block the World No. 1 player from entering the country.
To put further emphasis on the family’s battle cry, his father Srdjan Djokovic even made some shocking religious references, likening his son to “Jesus,” per The Sydney Morning Herald.
“Jesus was crucified on the cross … but he is still alive among us,” Srdjan stressed. “They are trying to crucify and belittle Novak and throw him to his knees.”
Srdjan also pointed out that “by doing that” to his son, the Australian government just proved to them that they are “trampling” on his countrymen.
“Novak is Serbia and Serbia is Novak,” Srdjan stated. “They are trampling over Serbia and by doing that, they are trampling on the Serbian people.”
“We Serbs are a proud European people. Throughout history, we have never attacked anyone, we only defended ourselves,” he elaborated. “That is what Novak, our pride, our Serb, the pride of the entire free world, is now doing by his behavior towards hosts and [tournament] organizers across the world, showing what kind of people he comes from."
"We Serbs are a proud people, who are proud of our light at the end of the tunnel, and that is our Novak. That political oligarchy will not extinguish it.”
Prior to Djokovic’s family, the Serbian government, led by its president Aleksandar Vucic, had already shown its support as the player deals with the sensitive matter.
"I've just finished my telephone conversation with Novak Djokovic," Vucic posted on Instagram via Reuters. "I told our Novak that the whole of Serbia is with him and that our bodies are doing everything to see that the harassment of the world's best tennis player is brought to an end immediately.”
"In line with all norms of international law, Serbia will fight for Novak, truth and justice. Novak is strong, as we all know."
Based on the trajectory of the past events, it is becoming more and more apparent that Djokovic is unlikely to take part in this year’s Australian Open, the prestigious tournament in which he has set an all-time record of nine wins.
