Autos Go Electric at North America Auto Show
Automakers showed off their plans for electric and hybrid autos set to go on sale in the coming years, as fuel efficient vehicles gained a bigger showcase in this year's North American International Auto Show.
The vehicles highlighted at the show include planned pure electric vehicles, and electric-gas hybrids.
- General Motors's luxury brand Cadillac unveiled the Converj concept coup. The car will travel up to 40 miles with electric power and extended-range capability of hundreds of miles. GM has already announced the Chevrolet bolt, an extended range vehicle that will be sold next year.
- Ford announced it planned to introduce a rechargeable electric car in 2011 in the U.S. with a range of up to 100 miles per charge.
- Chrysler showed off five electric-drive vehicles, with one of them going on sale by 2010 and three more by 2013.
- Toyota said it had plans for an all-electric vehicle in the U.S. by 2012, introducing an ultra-compact battery-powered concept car at the show. It's Lexus luxury brand will get a gas-electric vehicle on sale this summer.
- Honda showed off its Insight hybrid car, which is expected to compete with the Toyota Prius.
