'Avatar: The Last Airbender': Netflix Live-Action Series Adds Daniel Dae Kim As Fire Lord Ozai
Daniel Dae Kim is set to appear in Netflix's live-action adaptation of the beloved Nickelodeon series "Avatar: The Last Airbender." The actor will play the role of Fire Lord Ozai.
Daniel, whose TV credits include "The Hot Zone," "Anthrax" and "Hawaii Five-O," is no stranger to the world of "Avatar" as he lent his voice to the character of General Fong in the original animated series. He also played Horishi Sato in Nickelodeon's follow-up series "The Legend of Korra."
Fire Lord Ozai in Netflix's adaptation of the animated series is a "ruthlessly-driven leader of the Fire Nation who demands everyone live up to his impossible standards, especially his teen son, Prince Zuko. Ozai's drive to conquer and unite the world under firebender rule is a family burden — he believes that it's his destiny to finish a war started by his ancestors," according to TV Line.
The other cast members for the live-action drama include Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio Tarbell as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka and Dallas Liu as Zuko.
Writer and TV producer Albert Kim, who is known for his work on the TV series "Sleepy Hollow" and "Nikita," will serve as showrunner, executive producer and writer of "Avatar: The Last Airbender."
Daniel's most notable role on TV was ABC's "Lost" from 2004 to 2010. He also took on the role of executive producer on ABC's "The Good Doctor" and starred in WB's "Angel."
Daniel received a 2006 Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Ensemble for his role in "Lost." He also received an AZN Asian Excellence Award, a Multicultural Prism Award and a Vanguard Award from the Korean American Coalition for Outstanding Performance by an Actor, according to IMDb. In 2009, he was awarded the prestigious KoreAm Achievement Award in the field of Arts and Entertainment. He was named as one of People Magazine's Sexiest Men Alive twice.
Daniel, who is part of the voice cast of the upcoming animated drama series "Pantheon," recently appeared as a guest in FX's "The Premise." He also appears in the movies "Stowaway" on Netflix, Disney's "Raya and the Last Dragon" and Sony Pictures' "Blast Beat."
Netflix picked up "Avatar: The Last Airbender" in September 2018. But in August 2020, series creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko parted ways with the streaming platform citing creative differences and a hefty overall deal with ViacomCBS, according to Hollywood Reporter.
The pair has been assigned as co-chief creative officers of Avatar Studios, a new division of the ViacomCBS unit that will create series and movie projects based on "Avatar" and its follow up "The Legend of Korra."
